AO (Academic Orientation)

The second phase of FEP (Freshmen Enrichment Program) is AO which stands for Academic Orientation. In this part of FEP, students learn about the basics of college life and the whole AO is meant to be a simulation for students to help them adapt to their new college environments. In my major, Computer Science, there are 4 courses of AO, which are:

  • Computer Science
  • Curriculum
  • Academic Advisory
  • Support Center for Your Success

Most of my AO classes were in Anggrek Campus, and the schedule were pretty inconvenient, with a lot of the courses started at 07.20 AM and several had a few hours gap in between courses. The class I had in AO was different than the one in GO. I was in the class of CBN02 during GO, and my AO class is called LH01. This new class consisted of half CBN02 students, and the other half was EBN students.

In the Computer Science course, we were introduced to Algorithm which was basically structured thinking. Algorithm is the basic way of thinking made to help us create calculations and solve problems using operations which will be useful in coding and programming. We were also introduced to C++ programming language, pseudocodes, and flow charts. There was a test on these subjects that will determine our SAT points at the end of FEP. The test had 2 parts, the first was an essay about the basic theory of Computer Science, and the second was a coding test done in a computer. The coding test had only 4 problems with each having 25 points. A lot of the students struggle with this test, but a handful was successful in getting the perfect score. Aside from coding, there was an extra course that didn’t seem to be related to Computer Science. It was about learning methods, like mind mapping and giving presentations.

The Curriculum course was about all the textbooks, materials, and lecturers in this semester. This course was held in the auditorium and specialized course (we will have to choose 1 out of 4 in the third semester) was discussed. Academic Advisory course had us separated in groups with one Advisory Lecturer for each group. The Advisory Lecturer will provide guidance in navigating our college life, relationships, studies, and also job seeking. The last course is Support Center for Your Success. Students were informed about support centers that are provided to them by Binus University, such as:

  • Library and Knowledge Center
  • Study Registration and Service Center
  • Student Advisory Center
  • Binus Entrepreneurship Center
  • Binus Career Center
  • International Office
  • Quality Management Center
  • IT Division

HTTP (HIMTI Togetherness & Top Performance)

HTTP or HIMTI Togetherness & Top Performance is an annual event organized by HIMTI (Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Informatika) to welcome new students of SoCS (School of Computer Science). Thus, this event is specially created for those who just started studying Computer Science, Computer Science – Statistics, Computer Science – Mathematics, Game Application & Technology (GAT), Mobile Application & Technology (MAT), and Cyber Security. The theme of this year’s HTTP is “Passion, Innovation, and Togetherness” and to attend this event, students are required to buy a ticket for Rp 150.000. Apart from having the chance to participate in this event which was held on the 10th of September 2016, there were other benefits such as PBC class (Introduction to C Language), E-Certificate, SAT Points, T-Shirt, Exclusive Pin, Goodie Bag, Merchandise, Door prize, Lunch, and HIMTI Kit.

HIMTI Kit consists of tutorials, materials, and modules to support student’s learning process, as well as softwares and student created programs/applications. There are a lot of different types of softwares that were shared in this kit. The first one is Support Software which are Visual Studio 2010 Express Studio, Dev-Cpp, Eclipse. The second is Browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera. The third is Multimedia which are iTunes, Live2D, VLC Player, AVC. The fourth is Security with a selection of antiviruses such as AVG, Avast, SMADAV, and Microsoft Essential. The last is Utilities which are Daemon Tools, Line, Notepad++, Winrar, Rainlendar, IBM Lotus Simphony, and Java.

20160910_144754On the day of the event, all the new students of the Faculty of Computer Science gathered at the BPPT 2 Auditorium which was on the third floor of the building. There were shuttles provided by HIMTI to transport students from Kemanggisan and Alam Sutera campuses to the building and vice versa.  After students were seated in the auditorium, an animated movie titled “Zootopia” was aired on the main screen while everyone was waiting for the event to start at 9 o’clock. At the exact moment when the hour hand on our watches shifted to the number 9, the movie suddenly stopped and was replaced with an advertisement by Course Net, which was one of the event’s sponsors. That caused a pretty audible and simultaneous sigh from the audience.

After that, someone in a robot suit (presumably the mascot of HTTP) entered the stage and opened the show. There were 2 hosts (Sandy Alta Tadete & Clarissa Valencia) who guided us throughout the event. A band called “Peanut Butter” which all of it’s members were Binusian 2020 (just like the audience), played a few songs, including a cover of “Don’t Look Back In Anger” by Oasis which happened to be one of my personal favorites. Several important people responsible for making this event possible, such as the Head of HTTP (Martin Arlando Teng), the Chairman of HIMTI Kemanggisan (Jonathan Gozali) and HIMTI Alam Sutera (Rionaldo Aureri Linggautama), the Dean of School of Computer Science (Fredy Purnomo S.Kom., M.Kom), and the Vice Rector School of Computer Science (Drs. Andreas Chang, MBA.) gave us an opening speech. The next act was a solo performance by Adam Sidqon. He sang 3 songs with his guitar and successfully got the audience singing along.

Then, it was time for a game and the hosts went around searching for participants among the audience. The game was about continuing a sentence with one word for each person and the cycle won’t stop until a person is eliminated. Someone could be eliminated if he/she messed up a word or could’t come up with a word for a period of time. The last 2 final winners were then given special prizes from the sponsors of the event. Following this game was a one and a half hour break for lunch. Students were given rice boxes and bottles of mineral water. To be honest, the food wasn’t the best, especially for a ticket with that price.

20160910_131045After the break, there was a talk show about innovative masterpieces created by Binus SoCS Alumni, a humanoid robot called “Bimax” and “The Big Five” application. “Bimax” is an intelligent humanoid robot developed by Reinhard Lazuardi Kuwandy, Oey Kevin Wijaya, and Christian Tarunajaya. This robot is designed to interact with humans, thus it was created to have face recognition and understand sentences as well as giving responses with Indonesian language. It also has other abilities, such as telling stories, greetings, and playing music. In this talk show, Reinhard and Christian stated that creating Bimax took five months, including 2-3 months of research. The project was funded by the Minstry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti). Although it was granted 100 million rupiahs by the government, the project already costs 55 million rupiahs just for the hardware, not including softwares. The other speaker was Nathanael Febrianto who is the creator of “The Big Five Traits Personality Prediction” mobile application. He developed this application along with Albert Wijaya and Irwan Prasetia and collaborated with lecturers from the Faculty of Psychology (Binus) and a Post Doctoral Researcher from the University of Trento, Italy. This application only requires a Twitter ID to analyze the user’s tweets and predicts their personality. The tweets have to be in english in order to be analyzed and it will reveal The Big Five Traits of Personality which are Extroversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness.

At the end of the talk show, the 3 speakers were given mementos and goodie bags. Then, it was time for another game and the hosts yet again searched over the audience for volunteering participants. This time it was a ball catching game which the participants had to be in a team of two. One of them had to put a paper hat shaped like a tube and the other had to successfully throw a ping pong ball right into the paper hat. The two were separated at a certain distance and there were limited balls and time. The winners were given vouchers and goodie bags by Bantex and Diva Karaoke.

20160910_13153720160910_133029

The audience was presented with a silly drama or visualization about a group of new Binusian students who went through FEP together and pledged to become activists of HIMTI. Each student was depicted with funny and exaggerated characters to keep the audience entertained. After watching the visualization, everyone was instructed to leave the auditorium and was given a break time. While everyone was busy chatting and eating, HIMTI crews acted quickly in clearing up the first floor of the auditorium for the next segment of HTTP. When we were aloud to re-enter the auditorium,  a dance group called “Modern Dance Revolution” presented their well-rehearsed choreography. All of this group’s members were SoCS Binusians as well. There were also a performance by a professional band called “Vibing High” which was pretty exciting, regarding the fact that the sound system during their performance was a little corrupted.

20160910_140135The most waited moment finally arrived, when all of the new SoCS students were once again inaugurated and became official members of HIMTI. Students proudly wore their Alma mater jackets as they sang along to the hymn of HIMTI. This glorious moment was then followed by a series of contest and door prize winners announcements. Finally, we have come to the second most waited moment of HTTP, the DJ Performance. DJ Angelo gave everyone a fun time and the dance floor was lit (pardon my use of slang). After about thirty minutes of dancing and having fun, HTTP is finally over and everyone was given goodie bags with t-shirts & HIMTI Kit.

Organization Skills

According to Binus University’s Vision and Mission, graduates are required to be globally employable or be an independent entrepreneur. Thus, both hard skills and soft skills are essential to achieve these ideals.

VISION
A World-class Knowledge Institution
…in continuous pursuit of innovation and enterprise

MISSION
BINA NUSANTARA commits to deliver excellence in education and research for the global community by :
• Providing a learning experience that encourages and rewards innovation
• Creating high impact applied knowledge
• Pursuing a positive contribution to the quality of life
• Contributing to outstanding leadership
• Leading corporate entrepreneurship

Binus University has a lot of Student Associations and Organizations for students to hone their soft skills. In the previous post about GO (General Orientation) I have listed all the UKMs (Student Activity Units) and I decided to join 3 of them-BASIC, BNEC, BSLC. Besides UKMs, there are also HMJs or Himpunan Mahasiswa Jurusan (Student Association). HMJs are different for every faculties, and I happened to be a passive member HIMTI (Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Informatika) just by being a Computer Science student.

I haven’t participate that much in the UKMs that I chose because a lot of them have not even started yet.  I have only attended BASIC’s welcome party which was on the 4th of September 2016. BASIC stand for Bina Nusantara Swimming Club and was established in 1998. BASIC aims to be the organization that encourage students to develop good swimming skills.

“Knowledge is a priority, Friendship is a part of life, Swimming is a BASIC of healthy”

– BASIC tagline

BASIC’s achievements:

  • 2nd Place in National Swimming Championship among college students in Padang
  • 3rd Place in POMDA (ITB) National Swimming Championship in Bandung
  • 4th Place in KRAPTSI (UNJ) National Swimming Championship in Jakarta

BASIC has routine swimming practice twice a week. Other than that, there are other activities such as Vacation BASIC (recreational event), social services / blood donations, gathering, PAB (New Members Training), snorkeling, rafting, visiting water parks, etc.

Besides BASIC, I recently did BNEC’s TOEFL Placement Test. BNEC stand for Bina Nusantara English Club and one of the reasons I decided to join was because BNEC had achieved the title Best Student Organization in BINUS for 4 times. Also, this organization holds the title from Guinness World Records for “most people doing crossword simultaneously”. BNEC has 4 classes which are TOEFL, Debate, Scrabble, and Public Speaking & Performance. Out of those four, I am interested to join TOEFL and Debate class.

FEP (Freshmen Enrichment Program)

I am a Binusian 2020 (we’re supposed to graduate in 2020) and part of CBN 02 class of Computer Science. FEP has five batches, and I was part of the third batch which is CBN.

FEP Batches:

  1. 18-23 July 2016 (ABN /AAS)
  2. 1-6 August 2016 (BBN/BAS)
  3. 8-13 August 2016 (CBN/CAS)
  4. 15-20 August 2016 (DBN/DAS)
  5. 22-27 August 2016 (EBN/EAS)

The first part of FEP is General Orientation (GO), the second part is Academic Orientation (AO), and the last is Campus Life Orientation (CLO).

GO (General Orientation)

It was on the 8th of August 2016, when my so-called “Campus Life” began. I left my house to go to Binus Syahdan Campus early in the morning, although the orientation started at 9 o’clock. I had to wait for nearly 2 hours until the classroom door was opened and we were allowed to enter. Then after all of us were seated, I realized that almost everyone there was male. Well, out of roughly 70-ish people, only 14 (including myself) were women. There were 10 BCs (Buddy Coordinators) who guided us (Buddies) throughout GO. The topic of the day was just “briefing”, so we took the time to get to know each other and decided who was the class’ chief (Komti) and the vice (Wakomti). The first day of college was okay, it might be a little awkward, but I managed to make friends.

1470821375255

The day after, we all had to wear white shirts and black formal trousers. That was our uniform for the next several days until the GO ended. The whole experience was pretty nice. It was very informative and kept us aware of the important stuff like what to do if we lost our flazz cards (those are essential for attendance tapping), the requirements to take an exam, how to use Binus Maya-a website containing everything we need like class schedules, learning materials, our GPAs, etc. In order to graduate, the minimum GPA is 2.0 with 120 SAT points and 30 hours of community service. SAT (Student Activity Transcript) points are gained by doing stuff that hones our soft skills, such as attending seminars/orientations, being an activist, participating in competitions whereas community service hours are obtained by participating in Character Building (CB) sessions and other social/charity activities. We were promised to get 100 SAT points at the end of FEP if we participate in all of it’s sessions. But I heard rumors of seniors getting less than 100 points even if they follow all the sessions. I guess it all depends on how well we did the assignments that came with it, including this blog.

Furthermore, we also learned about Binusian Journey that was all about EES (Employability & Entrepreneurial Skills). It says that in order to be globally successful at being an entrepreneur, not only hard skills are needed, but also 6 key soft skills that includes:

  • Self Management
  • Team Work
  • Communication
  • Initiative & Enterprise
  • Problem Solving & Decision Making
  • Planning & Organizing

Other than that, there was Binus Way, where we learned about the history of Bina Nusantara University and the vision & mission of Binus. There was also a Religious session, where we were divided into different classes according to our religion and was given a session by our respective religious UKM.

IMG_20160813_205617

One of the more exciting part of GO was the Bunga Rampai session. We were gathered in the auditorium to watch all the UKMs (Student Activity Units) and Student Communities perform and promote their organizations. There are different HMJs or Himpunan Mahasiswa Jurusan (Student Association) for each faculty, and the HMJ of Computer Science is called HIMTI (Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Informatika).

Binus has a lot of UKMs such as:

  • BNEC (BINA NUSANTARA English Club)
  • BNMC (BINA NUSANTARA Mandarin Club)
  • NC (Nippon Club)
  • BNCC (BINA NUSANTARA Computer Club)
  • BSLC (Binus Student Learning Community)
  • Badminton
  • Table Tennis
  • Volley
  • Soccer
  • BNAC (BINA NUSANTARA Automotive Club)
  • BNSC (BINA NUSANTARA Softball-Baseball Club)
  • BNTC (BINA NUSANTARA Tennis Club)
  • BASIC (BINA NUSANTARA Swimming Club)
  • Band
  • B Voice Radio
  • Binus TV
  • B-preneur
  • Paramabira (Paduan Suara Mahasiswa BINA NUSANTARA) [Choir]
  • ST Manis (Seni Teater Mahasiswa BINA NUSANTARA) [Drama/Theatre Club]
  • Stamanara (Seni Tari Mahasiswa BINA NUSANTARA) [Dance Club]
  • Klifonara (Klub Pecinta Fotografi BINA NUSANTARA) [Photography Club]
  • Swanarapala (Mahasiswa BINA NUSANTARA Pencinta Alam) [Student Association for Environmental and Adventure Activity]

On the last day of FEP, all of CBN were gathered in the parking lot of Syahdan Campus. We finally met everyone from other faculties, and we all showed off our class yel-yel. We also did the 2020 Buddy yel-yel which was the song “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift that had some lyric changes and a funny choreography to go along with it. A bit cringey, but fun nonetheless. After that, we went to explore the Expo in little groups consisted of 6 people with 1 BC as our guide. Our “adventure” around the Expo had us witnessed the demonstration of each UKMs activities and gave us the chance to register to whichever UKM we were interested in. There is no limit in the number of UKMs a person could join. That being said, I joined 3 UKMs-BASIC, BNEC, BSLC.

20160813_125417

The peak of GO was the inauguration ceremony which was held on the 30th of August 2016. All of Binusian 2020 were expected to attend this grand and formal reception ceremony. The event was conducted in JCC (Jakarta Convention Center) Building which is located in Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex, Central Jakarta. The entire event was recorded by Binus TV and there were several performances from Binusian 2020 as well as some UKMs. After the representatives of each majors were symbolically inducted by the rector of Bina Nusantara University, we were allowed to put on our Alma mater jacket as we became an official Binusian.
